The Incomplete Araki

Exhibition Identity, Spacial Design

Client — Museum of Sex
Team — Base Design & Nobuyoshi Araki
Role — Design Lead

Nobuyoshi Araki is a Japanese photographer/contemporary artist. He is well known for his provocative and unapologetic erotic photography. The Incomplete Araki: Sex, Life,Death of Nobuyoshi Araki is his first solo exhibition in New York at the Museum of Sex.

Their objective was to create an identity for the exhibition that is visible and representational of his work that can further extend to the exhibition site. We proposed using calligraphic brushwork from Araki himself. A first person gesture that suggests how he inhabits his work and is instantly recognizable as Japanese. Further to this, the frenetic and imperfect nature of the brush stroke suggests a sense of immediacy, iteration and imperfection. (Presented calligraphy was done myself to communicate the concept with the clients and the end result was from the artist.)
